The political scene in Mt. Kenya is heating up as President William Ruto plots his course for the 2027 elections. While the focus is ostensibly on completing stalled projects from former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure, there’s a more complex strategy at play that could reshape the region’s political landscape.

Central to this plan is the endorsement of Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, a move that could sideline Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and potentially set the stage for Kindiki to become Ruto’s running mate.

    The Push for Infrastructure Development

Residents of Mt. Kenya are rightfully demanding the completion of key infrastructure projects that were left unfinished.

These projects are crucial not only for the region’s development but also for maintaining the political support Ruto needs for his re-election bid. However, behind this push for development, there’s a significant political manoeuvre underway.

    Endorsement of Kithure Kindiki

Recently, Mt. Kenya MPs publicly endorsed Kindiki as the region’s key link to the government. This endorsement is not just a political gesture; it’s part of a broader strategy to bolster Kindiki’s influence while gradually diminishing Gachagua’s role.

Known for his independent and sometimes stubborn stance, Gachagua has become a less favourable ally for Ruto. Instead, Kindiki is being positioned as a more compliant figure, who could also take on the role of launching key projects in the region.

    Political Implications and Future Prospects

The situation intensified this evening when thousands of MCAs from ten Mt. Kenya counties and the influential Nchuri Ncheke council of elders threw their support behind Kindiki. This overwhelming endorsement is a clear signal that Kindiki is being set up as a leading figure in Mt. Kenya politics, possibly even Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 elections.

However, this political strategy raises important concerns. Development should be a fundamental right for every Kenyan, not something that requires political manoeuvring or endorsements.

The danger here is that tying development projects to political loyalty could set a troubling precedent, undermining the principle that all citizens deserve equal access to public resources.

What’s Ruto’s Strategy for fulfilling his political game plan?

Ruto’s strategy involves borrowing Ksh 40 billion from China, with Ksh 27 billion allocated for Mt. Kenya’s development projects. The remaining Ksh 13 billion is expected to be used to reinforce support for Ruto’s agenda among local leaders.

If Kindiki is given the role of overseeing and launching these projects, it will further solidify his position and potentially pave the way for him to be Ruto’s choice for running mate.

As the political drama unfolds, the question remains: will Kindiki’s rise and the completion of development projects win over voters, or will it alienate those who feel the process is being manipulated for political gain? The next few years will reveal whether Ruto’s strategy will strengthen his hold on power or backfire, leaving Mt. Kenya’s voters caught in the crossfire of political manoeuvring.

In the end, the political moves being made today are setting the stage for the future of Mt. Kenya and the broader national landscape.

Whether this strategy will secure Ruto’s re-election or create new challenges remains to be seen. What’s clear is that the stakes are high, and the outcomes will have a lasting impact on the region and the nation as a whole.
